Ellen Kahn

Artist Statment

My work explores the confluences and associations between the natural and manmade worlds; chaos and order, gesture and structure, intellect and intuition, waking and dreaming, fantasy and reality, personal and universal. My exploration employs the careful articulation of the surface to create transparency, interweaving layers of imagery using a variety of traditional drawing and painting materials which includes hand lettering, print making. I combine images derived from botanical prints, childhood photographs, text, linear elements, and patterns to make sensual, evocative drawings. My recent work is an exploration and reflection of questions that have deep resonates for me as I re read, Through The Looking Glass, and Alice In Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll. I call this work the “Alice Series.”
