"I like to work in the zone where abstraction and representation shade off into each other, using bold colors, earthly textures and calligraphic lines. Years of practicing Chinese painting and calligraphy help me form a brushwork that is both free and disciplined. Observation of nature is the starting point of the paintings, but then I must decipher the mysteries of nature and of painting. For this I resort to taking apart the scene before my eyes and , in the process of rearranging it, I embark on a journey without a map. I land somewhere that I could never have predicted, a place I’ve never been." - Ying Li
