Support

December 1, 2010

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

We are proud to announce that The Painting Center's move to Chelsea has greatly increased attendance and interest in our mission. Our new vitality and momentum would not be possible without the support of foundations and individual supporters like you.

The inaugural exhibition in April 2010, Continuing Color Abstraction by curator Rella Stuart-Hunt, featured work by 22 artists who explore color and abstraction and received favorable reviews in The New York Sun and in Art Critical. The second exhibition, New Walls/Fresh Paint, a survey of works by past and present members and staff, celebrated sixteen years of aesthetic diversity at The Painting Center. In July, one of The Painting Center’s newest members, Matthew Farina, curated Philadelphia Painters, an exhibition featuring selected painters from the Philadelphia region. This year, solo exhibitions by Phillis Ideal, Ryan Cobourn, Kimberly Trowbridge, Patrick Webb, Caren Canier, Andrea Packard, Douglas Wirls, Rella Stuart-Hunt, and Daniel G. Hill were well attended and received. We close the year with Small Works Invitational, a show that includes 150 artists and benefits The Painting Center.

Early next year Painting Center member Craig Manister plans a retrospective of the figurative work of Earl Kerkam, an under-recognized contemporary and friend of Willem DeKooning and Jackson Pollock. The exhibition is funded in part through a grant from The Milton and Sally Avery Arts Foundation. In April, writer and painter Stephen Maine will curate an installation in which artists paint directly on the walls of The Painting Center. In January 2012, Emeritus member Carrie Patterson will curate an exhibition that explores the influence of Joseph Alber’s teaching on three generations of artists. As you can see, The Painting Center remains dedicated to supporting the work of emerging, mid-career, and under-represented artists; recognizing exceptional achievement in painting; and fostering dialogue about painting.

The members, staff and Advisory Board of The Painting Center hope that you will support our mission and continued renewal.  Please sustain The Painting Center’s legacy as a dynamic public forum for painters and those who love painting by contributing today.

Sincerely,

Shazzi Thomas, Director of The Painting Center
