The Painting Center, a non-profit, artist-run art gallery in Chelsea, is looking for new members. The gallery is governed by its artist members, with an advisory board of alumni and supporters. The membership is responsible for organizing the calendar of exhibitions, maintaining financial stability, voting on new members, and carrying out The Painting Center’s mission.

Curatorial Opportunities

The Painting Center seeks proposals for curated exhibitions on an ongoing basis. We have a history of showing significant work from both the past and the present. Exhibitions are often reviewed, seen by many people and provide educational tools for students and the public. We encourage artists and curators to use our space to examine unique ideas about painting and its possible directions.

Art File

The Art File is a curated online presentation available to the public for viewing through The Painting Center's website. Art File members have a curated web-presence on The Painting Center's website as well as the potential for inclusion in our numerous member and guest-curated exhibitions.

Artist Registry

The Artist Registry offers the opportunity for artists to submit digital images of their work to be collected in the registry which is regularly consulted for inclusion in group exhibitions in the gallery, or solo exhibitions in the Project Room. In addition, the registry is available to outside curators. Note: The Artist Registry is a digital registry located in the database of The Painting Center computers. This registry is not online.

Juried Exhibitions

The Painting Center, an artist-run gallery in Chelsea, announces a call for entries for its juried summer exhibition FIGHT OR FLIGHT. This exhibition is about the practice of making art during tumultuous times. Some artists express their personal responses to world events, while others intentionally ignore what is going on and make art that becomes a refuge from the turbulence surrounding them. Application Process: Slide Room:
