Douglas Wirls has lived and worked in New York City and the Catskill Mountains for the past thirty-five years. “My work, for the most part, is about the creation of imagined environments. It is from the two places that I inhabit, city and country, that I take impulses, found in the ambience of rhythms and spaces particular to these discrete places.” In addition to exhibitions at The Painting Center, his paintings and drawings have been represented in many solo and group shows including the Prince Street Gallery in New York; Denise Bibro Gallery in New York: the Ober Gallery, Kent Conn; The More Gallery, Philadelphia; The Philadelphia Academy and the National Academy of Design in New York, where he has received awards for both painting and drawing. Works are included in many private and public collections, including The Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio, The Pennsylvania State Museum and The New Jersey State Museum. He is currently a professor at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY.
