Exhibition Dates: June 21, 2011 - August 6, 2011
Reception: June 23, 6 - 8 pm
The Painting Center is pleased to present "Grey Matter" a nationally juried exhibition exploring the role of grey in contemporary painting and drawing.
Mutable and mysterious, grey can signify both a presence and an absence in painting. It is the middle ground of our perceptual value scale and lends itself to a variety of usages and interpretations. The relationship artists have to grey in their work can reveal a lot about their sensibilities, intent and background. "Grey Matter" explores the nuances of these differences by considering grey as both a color and an idea in creativity. In a timely fashion, the nature of some of the works exhibited remark on cultural and economic downturn - perhaps intentionally away from more vivid hues.
The diverse group of artists included in the show live and work throughout the US: Paul Behnke, Elia Bettaglio, Cat Balco, Katie Claiborne, Katie Crown, Rose DeSiano, Eric Dever, Donna Festa, David Fratkin, Danielle Goldsmith, Anki King, Michael Mancari, Michael Lee, Stephanie McMahon, Frank Meuschke, Tempest NeuCollins, Margaret Noel, Bruce Pollock, Anne Russinof, Tony Saunders, Julie Shapiro, Anita Thacher and Tamar Zinn.
“Grey Matter” is curated by Matthew Farina and Rachael Wren, and runs from June 21st - August 6th, 2011 with an opening reception on June 23 from 6-8 pm. The exhibition is accompanied by an illustrated catalog with an essay from the curators.
