The Painting Center is pleased to present the solo exhibition by Tracy Burtz titled Voices in the Main Gallery. This exhibition expresses Burtz’s emotions through composition, color, value, light, line, volume and space.

As a seasoned artist, Burtz moves beyond her traditional education as a painter and into a space of contemplation. Her narrative is focused, and despite her depictions becoming simplified, they have also become more specific. Each painting holds a process of concentrated exploration over time–a building of abstract emotion and paint on a two dimensional plane. Burtz begins each painting from life and then allows the painting to take over. Her paintings always have a story but her ultimate goal is for the viewer to bring their experience to discover their own intimacy and meaning in the work.

Burtz’s paintings are mostly about being a woman, life, and its circumstances, which often are autobiographical. Voices often includes dogs and other animals: “I paint about their fidelity and their relationship to me as they were close at hand and rescued me from my loneliness and isolation during the pandemic… For many the embodiment of true constancy is the dog, who sits and watches and listens.”

Tracy Burtz received her BFA from Boston University for the Arts in 1978 and her MFA from CUNY Queens College in 1980. She also studied at The Studio School in Paris in 1977. She has had 18 solo shows in NYC, Atlanta, Nantucket, Westchester NY and Paris France, and has been in over 50 group exhibitions. She is currently represented by Edgewater Galleries in Middlebury, Vermont, Thomas Deans Fine Art in Atlanta, Georgia, EastEnd Gallery and Nantucket Looms, both in Nantucket, Massachusetts. Burtz’s studio is in Pleasantville, New York, 30 min north of New York City.
