For more than 33 years, The Painting Center has been a vital space where painting continues to thrive in all its forms. As one of New York City's longest-running artist-founded nonprofit galleries dedicated to painting, we have presented more than 800 exhibitions, championed thousands of artists, launched careers, and welcomed countless visitors through free exhibitions, artist talks, panel discussions, and public programs.

As an independent, artist-run nonprofit, our mission has always been to put artists first. We provide opportunities based on artistic merit rather than market trends, creating a space where experimentation, dialogue, and community can flourish.

Rising operating costs and continued funding pressures have widened the gap between what it costs to present ambitious exhibitions and the resources available to support them.
