The Painting Center presents Between Surface and Space curated by Shazzi Thomas and Kellie Lehr at the Future Fair from May 13–16, 2026. The group booth features twelve artists whose practices explore the evolving possibilities of painting through material, spatial, and process-based approaches.
The presentation highlights the diverse ways these contemporary artists engage painting today, from materially driven abstraction to works that explore the relationship between surface, structure, and space. The participating artists include: Kathleen Beausoleil, Lesley Bodzy, Connie Brown, Steven Cabral, Mary Crenshaw, Dale Emmart, Kellie Lehr, Lisa Petker Mintz, Ginnie Peterson, Jamie Powell, Rachel Volpone, and David Willburn.
Founded in 1993, The Painting Center is a nonprofit, artist-founded organization dedicated to advancing experimental and critically engaged approaches to painting through exhibitions and public dialogue. Its presentation at the Future Fair reflects the organization’s continued commitment to supporting contemporary painting and expanding its presence within the broader art community.
