June 19 - July 14, 2018

Opening RECEPTION: Thursday, June 21, 6 - 8 PM

The Painting Center presents its annual summer juried exhibition JuxtaPositions, curated by Anthony Cuneo, Alannah Farrell, and Robin Feld. The artists who were chosen to present their work in this show explore the idea of placing different visual elements close together to create uniquely contrasting effects.

Creativity isn’t only about making entirely new things. The creative process can involve seeing old things in new contexts by joining things that previously seemed completely unrelated or turning conventions, tropes and ideas upside down and inside out. Sometimes, these juxtapositions are humorous; sometimes, they are enigmatic or striking; sometimes, they are shocking. High and low, serious and funny, real and fake, observed and invented, political and personal. These are all choices an artist can make in their work.

In a culture saturated by imagery, icons, arguments, products, brands and waste, Juxtapositions brings artists from all over the country to come together and invent something new by mining, reframing, re-contextualizing, and re-conceiving some of the ideas and objects that make up the cultural moment in which we live.
