Christopher Varmus
Born in San Francisco in 1978 and based in Brooklyn since 1999, I strongly relate to places— such as port cities— where the confluence of cultures creates new and interesting hybrids. My work naturally traffics in improvisation and experimental play as I relish the frequent fortuitousness of happenstance.
Drawing from a background in social work and gardening, I think of making as a form of relational care—an inquiry into how materials hold memory and how attention becomes its own medium. The process often echoes daily negotiation: between clarity and blur, self and collective, grief and humor.
