Born in Colombo Sri Lanka in 1952, Ferdinands holds a Honours B.F.A. in Visual Art, an A.R.C.T. (Piano), and B.ED. Based in Toronto, she has exhibited for 4 decades. She received Grants to study traditional arts and crafts in Sri Lanka, and Islamic Patterning in London.
My paintings acknowledge the Pattern & Decoration movement while expressing my vision rooted in my South Asian heritage. These illusory landscapes hovering between representation and abstraction. are painted intuitively. Through the process of layering a mix of objects, nature imagery, patterning and ornamentation they reflect themes of identity, migration and belonging.
