Born in Colombo Sri Lanka in 1952, Ferdinands holds a Honours B.F.A. in Visual Art, an A.R.C.T. (Piano), and B.ED. Based in Toronto, she has exhibited for four decades. She received Grants to study traditional arts and crafts in Sri Lanka, and Islamic Patterning in London.
My paintings acknowledge the Pattern & Decoration movement while expressing my vision rooted in my South Asian heritage. These illusory landscapes hovering between representation and abstraction. are painted intuitively. Through the process of layering a mix of objects, nature imagery, patterning and ornamentation they reflect themes of identity, migration and belonging.
