Susan Cooper
SP Cooper was born in Nebraska,raised in multiple states including a naval base. She attended multiple colleges including Kansas City Art Institute, NYU,Suny NY. These were peripatetic educational experiences interspersed and interrupted by necessary employment.Initial training was experimental painting and printmaking.
Following a near death experience ( that was not accidental) in NYC, I began to create The River Series that fused a personal story with more universal themes of archetypal and symbolic imagery. This particular series morphed into later work that became less concerned with specific imagery but continued to include elements that became enmeshed into patterns, surface treatments and sedimentary layers. Gesture becomes less about a visual expectation and more of a feeling, somatic experience where marks are just happening without my psyche being the dominant force.
